“Make their First Job Memorable” – Stefan Murphy, CEO, Unifi UK & Ireland

How do you encourage young people to join aviation? “Make their first job memorable,” said Stefan Murphy, CEO for Unifi UK and Ireland, during a recent panel discussion on the future of aviation talent at the inter airport Focus Conference in Munich.

The session, titled Workforce of the Future and chaired by Regional Gateway Editor Chloe Greenbank, brought together industry leaders to discuss the evolving needs of the aviation workforce. Topics ranged from mental health and flexible employment models to the importance of training and mentorship.

At Unifi, flexibility is central to how our teams operate. Our new algorithm-based scheduling tool, WorksForMe, allows employees to easily trade shifts with teammates — giving them more control over when and how they work. In just the first month after launch, more than 11,000 shift trades were completed across our network.

WorksForMe reflects Unifi’s Elevating People philosophy — empowering employees, promoting balance, and supporting the way they work best.

The discussion also highlighted how airports and aviation service providers across Europe are investing in the next generation of talent—through apprenticeship programs, study opportunities, and initiatives that foster a supportive and inclusive workplace culture. A common theme emerged: when employees feel valued and empowered, it strengthens both the workforce and the customer experience.

As the aviation industry continues to evolve, Unifi remains committed to leading with people-first practices that build purpose, flexibility and growth into every role—creating memorable first jobs and lifelong careers in aviation.
